I picked out my expert to interview. I initially picked coach Tom to to be my expert since he is a USBC certified coach, but I never had a chance to ask him for time to answer my questions. Since I couldn't get to coach Tom, I decided to interview the next best person to talk to, Henrie Burke. Henrie, like Tom, is a USBC certified coach, and I asked him to be my expert and he agreed. He gave me his email and I sent him my questions; he replied in only 2 days.
The questions that I asked Henrie included basics to bowling, proper ball release, how to get spare conversions, picking up splits, and the different types of bowling balls. He replied stating that the proper ball release needs to have proper rotation when rolling down the lane and that when you release the ball, you're hand should be in a handshake position. Picking up spares requires basic adjustments: 3 boards to the right for every left side pin, and 4 boards to the left for every right side pin (assuming the bowler is right handed). Picking up splits requires some luck and extreme skill. Lastly, the type of bowling ball used for a beginner would be determined by the bowler's age, weight, and physical abilities.
Most of these responses that Henrie gave me were things that I already knew. For example, I already knew about how to get spares, basic equipment, and types of bowling balls. However, I didn't know that a beginner's age and weight would factor into what kind of bowling ball they would start out with. Even though most of the information that I was given I already knew, I figured that it would be better for newer bowlers to believe this information if I got from an expert. I felt a learning experience when reading some of his responses to my questions.
I feel like this information has helped me a lot. Even though I felt that I already knew basic information about bowling, reading Henrie's responses reminded me of some things that I had forgotten and even helped me in my own bowling experience. After performing this interview, I began picking back up my scores and I made improvement. Overall, my interview with Henrie helped me and my project.

Project Update #10
My overall project has come to a close. I wanted to complete a third video but I wasn't able to find someone to help me film. My first 2 videos however cover the primary material that I needed to cover. My first video covered the ball release: a straight ball and a curve ball. Both releases are essential to becoming a good bowler. My second video covered basic equipment and how to pick up spares. These topics are also essential to becoming a good bowler.
I am currently working on my powerpoint presentation about my project. I have gotten 2 slides done and am still working to complete it. The slides that I have completed address the general overview and goals of my project. I will further complete the presentation by addressing the questions on the last page in the pvhaspassion packet. My project has shifted quite a bit but I will address that in my powerpoint. Overall, I will be working on the presentation and make sure that I have everything that I will need in doing so.

Project Update #9
Today I researched versatility in bowling. The key to becoming versatile is to bowl on different patterns. Examples are to play on short patterns (such as the cheetah), which make you play near the gutter, and to play on long patterns (such as the scorpion), which force you to play closer to the center. Being able to play in multiple areas is versatility and it's what allows pro bowlers to be successful in many tournaments. This information came from http://www.bowlingball.com/BowlVersity/increase-your-bowling-versatility.
My overall project is still a bit slow. Zev couldn't help me last weekend due to reasons unknown, but I still plan on making my final video. Hopefully I can find someone else to help me film. In the meantime, I will be making my powerpoint presentation about my overall project. The presentation will include the strengths, weaknesses, and obstacles I had to overcome to complete my project. In general, my project is almost complete and I'll be completing my powerpoint.

Project Update #8
Today I did research on house shot vs sport shot. Similarities include that there is a pattern that affects how the ball reacts. The major differences are the purpose and design of the patterns. A house shot is designed to have fun while a sport shot is designed to test a bowler's skill. Another difference is that house patterns have a wider margin of error whereas the sport pattern has a very small margin of error. The small room for error makes the bowler be more consistent. This information came from http://tamerbowling.com/house-shot-vs-pba-or-sport-shot/.
My overall project is slowing down a little bit but I'm catching up. I'm going to make my four static pages and add my expert advice to one of them. I'm going to film and edit my third video this weekend once again at Tucson Bowl. I will ask my friend Zev if he'd be willing to help me again. Overall, my project is a little behind but I will catch up and begin preparing for my TED talk powerpoint.

Project Update #7
Today I researched sport oil patterns. Sport patterns are designed to test the skill of the bowler and their ability to bowl on these different patterns. For example, short patterns such as the Cheetah force bowlers to play very close to the gutter whereas longer ones like the Shark make players play closer to the center of the lane. These different patterns give less room for error than house patterns do. This information came from http://www.bowlingball.com/info/lane-pattern-length.html.
For my overall project, I plan on filming my third video sometime this weekend. I will most likely have Zev help me again and I will once again use powerdirector for the editing. It will be about consistency and details of the oil condition. My expert, Henry, emailed me back answers to my questions and I will be making my expert video soon as well. Overall, my project is going smooth and I need to make these videos as soon as possible.

Project Update #6
Today I researched adjusting to different lane conditions. Bowlers should generally be consistent when the oil pattern is fresh. If the ball is hooking too much, the bowler should left, and if it's not hooking enough, they should move right. These movements cause angle changes which will take into account the more or less friction on the lane surface. This information came from http://www.bowlingball.com/BowlVersity/changing-lane-conditions.
Last weekend, I edited my second video and posted it to my blog. When attempting to post it, blogger said that my video file size was to big and I had to use a program called HandBrake to shrink the file size while retaining the quality of the video. I've gathered my questions and have sent them to my expert via email and am currently awaiting the response. I'm going to change my implementation guide to only have 4 videos since I'm behind. The change for my guide is also due to its topic: sport oil patterns. I would have to have the employees at Tucson Bowl reprogram their oil machine so that I could demonstrate the differences in reactions and I believe this to be a different task for them. Overall, my project is going smooth and with the change in implementation guide, I'm now on track for my projected finish date.

Project Update #5
Today I researched oil conditions. Oil conditions are determined by how long the lanes have been oiled and how many people bowled on them. Fresher conditions have less friction and thus less hook potential. The more people have bowled on it, the less oil and more friction and thus more hook potential. This information from http://www.bowlingball.com/info/lane-conditions.html.
Last weekend, my friend Zev helped me film the rest of my second video. I'm getting ready to edit and post it to my blog. My plan to catch up on my implementation guide is to film a video once a week since I'm one week behind. This weekend I will interview my coach about bowling tips. Overall, my project is going smoothly but I'm behind.

Project Update #4
Today, I researched how to have consistency while bowling. A bowler must throw the ball the same
way every time. For example, they must keep their arm straight, swing it approximately to the same position each time, and release the same way each time (i.e. palm face up for straight ball, hand shake position for curve ball). Being consistent allows for easy adjustments and higher scores. This information came from http://www.bowlingball.com/BowlVersity/how-to-develop-a-consistent-bowling-hook.
For my videos, I'm still about a week behind. I planned on having my third video done today but I'm currently working on my second. During spring break, my friend Zev and I went to Tucson Bowl to film the second video but we had limited time due to leagues and parties coming later on. We were able to film half of the video and I plan on filming the other half sometime this week. I will find a way to catch up on my videos. Overall, my project is going smooth but a week behind.

Project Update #3
I researched the equipment that is necessary for bowling. The equipment includes: a bowling bag, bowling ball, glove, towel, and ball cleaner. The glove is to keep your wrist in place when swinging the ball back and forth. The towel is to wipe off oil after each throw since oil causes the ball to be more slippery and harder to hold on to. Ball cleaner is used to clean ball since it will ware and tear over time. This information came from http://www.bowlingball.com/BowlVersity/bowling-equipment-you-should-own.
For my project, I am planning to catch up on my implementation guide by filming my second video over the break. I already asked Zev if he would help me film again and he agreed. I will film it at Tucson Bowl again and I will reuse Cyberlink Powerdirector. After my first 2 videos I will look for feedback on whether I should explain things more thoroughly. Overall my project will be going more smooth once I'm caught up on my videos.

Project Update [For 3/02/16]
I researched straight ball vs. curve ball. I needed to know why the curve ball is the ideal shot as opposed to a straight ball. What I've found is that a curve ball is more likely to get a strike because it drives on the 5 pin (center pin). Whereas when throwing a straight ball, the ball will slide around the 5 pin. Also, a curve ball generates more power and more pin action than a straight could. This information came from http://livehealthy.chron.com/straight-bowler-vs-hook-bowler-4110.html.
I am getting ready to make my first video. I will film it at Tucson Bowl and my friend Zev will film. I asked him the day before and he said that he'd be willing to help me with my project. I will use the concepts that I've laid out in my implementation guide in my first video (how to throw a straight ball and curve ball). Overall, I'm a little behind but will catch up and everything else is going smoothly.

Project Update [For 2/24/16]
I researched how to throw a curve ball. It's similar to throwing a straight ball, except instead of having your palm facing up, you'd have it in a handshake position. When releasing the ball, you want your thumb to slide out first, and then your fingers. This will cause that side rotation which will eventually result in the curve throw. This information came from http://beginnerbowlingtips.com/learn-to-bowl-a-hook-with-correct-technique.
I'm supposed to have my first video done according to my implementation guide, but I'm behind because I don't have a cameraman and I've been busy with homework from other classes. I also have an upcoming bowling tournament in Phoenix. I will have to find a cameraman and schedule my filming around my tournament and make room for homework. I have my steps in place but I need to catch up on my schedule. Overall, my project is having kind of a rough start and I need to find way to fix it.

Project Update [For 2/10/16]
I haven't made my elevator pitch yet but I will. I need to find someone hold my camera while I'm explaining my topic. I've been busy with homework from chemistry, statistics, and physics. I've had to write up some labs for chemistry and physics, and do homework for statistics. I'm trying to finish these tasks so that I can focus on my pvhaspassion project.
As for my project, I have gone through my video editing software (Cyberlink Powerdirector) to see if it has everything I need for my videos and it does. I have a camera to use to film. I'm not quite sure where filming will take place but I'll figure that out as I go. Overall, I'm still putting together my plan and once it's finished, I will need to put it into action.

Project Update [For 2/03/16]
I wrote my proposal and posted it on my reflections blog. In the proposal, I wrote about how I will do research on the basics of bowling and post it to my blog, some resources that I plan to use is a book (Bowling: How to Master the Game by Parker Bohn III) and interviewing some of the coaches at my local bowling center, and that my plan is to make videos and blog posts about how succeed in the sport. I followed the guidelines for each paragraph in the PVhaspassion packet. It took me 2 days to begin and complete the proposal. Using it, I will use my proposal as a guide for my elevator pitch.
Now that I have my proposal complete, I shall begin building a step by step plan. I filled in my implementation guide; I will make a video once every 2 weeks and do research on a different topic related to my passion topic every week. My first video will include how to throw a straight ball and a curve ball. My second video will include why the curve ball is the ideal shot and how to pick up spares. Each video will follow a pattern that goes from the basics to the complex topics. Overall, I must figure out where and when I will do my filming.

Project Update [For 1/27/16]
I went through the ideas for the passion project. I felt like doing something bowling related, since bowling is one of my passions. So I've decided that I'm going to make a blog about the secrets bowling success. In other words, the steps to achieve the high scores that the pros on television always score. I created my blog at bowling200s.blogspot.com.
I began thinking about some ideas for my proposal and elevator pitch. I completed the brainstorm sheet, where I wrote my book as Bowling: How to Master the Game by Parker Bohn III and my expert as coach Tom (the bowling coach at Cactus Bowl). My plan is to make videos and posts to explain each step towards success in the sport. From this experience, I want to learn how difficult it can be to teach/explain concepts to others. Lastly, I will determine how functional my videos are by whether or not people can understand what's going on in the videos.

Project Update #2
Today I researched how to pick up spares. What I've found is that, assuming the bowler is right handed, they must move 3 boards to the right for every left side pin (three for the 2 pin, six for the 4 pin, and nine for the 7 pin) and 4 boards to the left for every right side pin (four for the 3 pin, eight for the 6 pin, and twelve for the 10 pin). Moving an extra board to for right side pins is due to the rotation going against where they want it to go. Pick up spares is essential for the high scores. All of this information was found on bowling.about.com/od/learntobowl/ss/howtopickupspares_righties.htm
Last week I filmed my first tutorial video on how to achieve high scores in bowling. I filmed at Tucson Bowl where my friend Zev was the cameraman. I demonstrated how to throw a straight ball and a curve ball. After the filming was done, I edited the footage on Cyberlink PowerDirector 12. I added transitions, a title, and subtitles. I added the subtitles because I couldn't silence the background noise. There is one scene in the video that uses a split screen, in which I looked on YouTube how to put in the split screen. Overall, my project is going fairly smoothly.

Project Update #1
I researched throwing a straight ball in bowling. A player must swing the ball back and release the ball with their palm facing up. Assuming the bowler is right handed, it would be ideal to throw the ball over the 2nd arrow and have it go into the pocket (1-3 pins). This information came from http://www.bowlingball.com/BowlVersity/bowling-tips-for-straight-ball-bowlers. I am looking for someone to help me film my videos. I already have a camera and a video editing software (Cyberlink Powerdirector). I have learned how to use the software from videos on YouTube.
I am thinking about making the videos at Tucson Bowl. I will make 1 video every 2 weeks. I will be able to make video after video once I have someone to help me film. My plan is that my first video will include the straight ball, the curve ball and the basics of bowling. Overall, my plan is set and I need to set it into motion.
